When Squintum, a rather cross-eyed Siamese cat, meets Lubber, a brown and white mongrel dog, a magnificent journey across the country begins.
They both live in the dog shelter, but while Squintum is free poor Lubber is a prisoner, and when his two weeks are up and he is to be put down to make way for other dogs, Squintum saves his life! They both run away and soon meet up with Katie , a racing pigeon who thanks to a farmer with a gun has lost her sense of direction, and Collen, a young and beautiful Irish Red Setter.
Together the four of them set off, overcoming all obstacles in order to find Lubber's home.
But all he remembers about his loving home with his two old lady owners,sisters Miss Bun and Miss Bee, is that they live in a little cottage with a thatched roof, in a little village below a hill, with a white horse carved into the side with chalk.
